Kensington Girl Lights Firework In Hand Inside; NJ Gov Murphy Signs Budget; AC Night Club to Close

A young girl is in critical condition after a firework exploded in her hands inside her Kensington home on Sunday morning, 6/30. It happened around 10:35 a.m. on the 1800 block of East Wishart Street. The 9-year-old girl found the firework, possibly an M80, inside her house. She lit the explosive and it went off while she was holding it. The girl was taken to St. Christopher's hospital in critical condition. The bomb squad is checking the house for any more fireworks. The Special Victims unit has been notified.

New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed a $38.7 billion budget into law on Sunday just hours before a constitutional deadline. This year's budget is 3% larger than last year's. Signing the law before the deadline prevents a partial government shutdown and keeps state beaches and parks open during the upcoming July 4th holiday. This budget increases spending for public pension, education, and public transit. Murphy had asked for higher income taxes on those earning over $1 million, but was turned down. He also used his line item veto to cut some funding.

Haven Nightclub, located inside the Golden Nugget Casino, in Atlantic City, NJ, will be closing in late July. The club's last day will be July 28th. "We are incredibly thankful to our customers and team members who have made Haven a thriving nightlife venue," said Tom Pohlman, senior vice president and general manager of Golden Nugget. "We value our employees, their dedication to our company and are working to place them in current open positions." The club opened in 2013. The establishment was in the news last fall when Atlantic City Mayor Frank Gilliam and Councilman Jeffree Fauntleroy were involved in a scuffle with others outside of the club. Casino officials do not say what will replace Haven, but expect that it will be "a unique amenity that will complement the property."
