Lenny Dykstra Sentenced to 3 Years Prison

Former Phillies star centerfielder and self proclaimed financial/investment guru, Lenny Dykstra, was sentenced to three (out of a possible 4) years in California state prison today.

He had pleaded no contest to grand theft auto and filing a false financial statement that was part of scheme to steal cars. Dykstra tried to change his plea last minute to stand trial and fight the charges, but the judge rejected the plea withdrawal stating he had ample opportunities beforehand. He was taken into immediate custody after the court proceedings.

In January 2011, Dykstra, his accountant, Robert Hymers, 27, and friend Christopher Gavanis, 30, tried to lease high-end car from several dealerships by providing fraudulent information and claiming credit through a phony business.

The prosecution said that Dykstra and Hymers allegedly provided information from a man who they said was a co-signer at two dealerships, even though they were not authorized to use his name.

Dykstra failed at his attempts to lease a new Mercedes-Benz S-550 and new Cadillac, but they were able to obtain a Ford Flex, a Lincoln and a Ford Mustang.

Did I do something I'm not proud of? Yes," Dykstra said. "Am I a criminal? No."

"Mr. Dykstra might not believe he is a criminal, but his actions have been criminal," Judge Cynthia Ulfig said, emphasizing the "sophistication and planning" involved in these crimes.
