Former Dismissed Teacher Sets off Lock Down at Cardinal O'Hara After He Trespasses In Building

Today, students, teachers and parents got a scare when a former teacher at Cardinal O'Hara was seen trespassing in the building during school hours today. School officials had escorted him from the building at 10:55 a.m. only to find that at 11:38 he had returned. The second time, he was seen in the school gym by another teacher, a former colleague, and fled.

The incident today triggered an hour long lockdown out of precaution as the school was swept for the suspect. He had fled the property and returned to his Chester County home.

"Further information indicated that the school officials had lost track of the individual," Police Chief Murray said, "and out of an abundance of caution, they locked down the school until they could locate and remove the subject."

Police in Marple Township have identified the intruder as Walter Lion, 61, of Pennsbury Township, Chester County. As of late Friday afternoon, charges against Lion of defiant trespass and related offenses were pending. He has been brought into custody.

The school lockdown lasted from 11:45 a.m. and ended at 12:45 p.m once police had taken Lion into custody at his home.

Lion was dismissed from Cardinal O'Hara in 2008 for having porn on his computer. That is a violations of a morals clause in the employment contract with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Concerned parents had begun to gather outside the school once news of the incident became public and took their children home once the lock down was lifted.

As for motive in this case. No one could even speculate what Lion was doing at the school or why he came back 4 years later. No one was hurt in the incident, no weapons were used/found, and Lion didn't seem to bring or take anything away. Investigation will be ongoing.
