A gas tank explosion rocked a 7-Eleven in Philadelphia's Feltonville neighborhood on Tuesday morning, 3/12. It happened around 11:30 a.m. on the 4700 block of Mascher Street. Contractors were on site doing work on the gas station. The tanks had been removed by a backhoe on Monday, 3/11, and vacuumed out. They were continuing work today when something sparked the blast. Concrete and other debris went flying into the air. A manhole cover was tossed up before crashing on the back of 7-Eleven patron Meko Noel’s Nissan Sentra. A spokesperson for the City of Philadelphia said the contractor has a permit and the state Department of Environmental Protection certification required. No was injured. The convenience store building structure was unaffected. An investigation is underway.

A student from Bishop McDevitt High School was arrested on Tuesday morning, 3/12, for bringing an unloaded handgun to school. Cheltenham police responded to the school around 8:15 a.m. The 17-year-old 11th grade student from Philadelphia had arrived late and smelled of marijuana. He was found carrying a 9 mm handgun which was later determined to be stolen. He is charged with possession of a gun on school property, possession of a firearm by minor, firearms not to be carried without a license, theft, and receiving stolen property. The student is being held at Montgomery County Youth Center to await further court proceedings.

A man armed with a butcher knife was shot and killed by an on duty security guard at the My Phillie Wireless store in North Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon, 3/12. It happened around 12:30 p.m. on the 2700 block of North Broad Street. The man with the knife ran behind the counter. That is when the security guard shot him once in the chest. He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are investigating.
