Study shows Full Effect of Sunoco and ConocoPhillips Refinery Closings

Delaware County officials warned of the devastating effects of the closings of the Sunoco and ConocoPhillips refineries in Marcus Hook and Trainer on Wednesday. They cited a state analysis they requested that said that for every job lost at the refinery, 18 non-refinery jobs would either be lost, lose hours, or in some other way be affected.

There are currently 1,100 union workers contracted at the two refineries who would lose their jobs, according to the state study. That would multiple to be a large number of non-refinery jobs that would be impacted, some say perhaps 15,000. Service industries such as restaurants and bars would be the first to feel the impact of the lost business, but eventually it will make it's way throughout the entire community as retail, sub-contractors and wholesalers lose business, and the local governments and schools lose significant tax revenue.

A transition center for former refinery employees will open at the United Steelworkers Union Hall in Linwood on March 1. The county also applied for a $5 million national emergency grant.
