Lincoln U. Basketball Players Arrested; Gov. Tom Wolf Talks Marijuana; Fmr. Student Poisons Roommate

More than half of the members of the Lincoln University men's basketball team were arrested last weekend following an on-campus incident. Several students face multiple charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, simple assault, burglary, and other related charges. Lincoln University did not identify the students or get into detail about the incident, but their names appear on Pennsylvania criminal court dockets. The student-athletes are Tamir Green, Gevon Arrington, Zahrion Blue, Maurice Waters, Myles Markland, Martin Kinsley and Bernard Lightsey. Lincoln posted bond for all seven students and they suited up for Wednesday night's game, 12/19. "The University wishes to ensure that all students are able to complete the semester and be home for the holidays," a school statement read. The men are due back in court in early January. Lincoln University is located in Chester County.

UPDATE: Lincoln University released this statement on Thursday afternoon. "In response to alleged thefts among students, an altercation occurred. The group included athletes and a non-athlete. The University enacted its student conduct process and subsequently, the students chose to press charges against each other. The University worked with students and their families to post bond and the funds will be returned when the students appear for their hearings in January. The University will continue to work its due process procedures as well as work with local authorities."

Pennsylvania Democratic Governor Tom Wolf opened the door to discussing recreational marijuana in the state. During a question and answer session with the public on Twitter on Wednesday, 12/19, Wolf tweeted, "it is time for Pennsylvania to take a serious and honest look at recreational marijuana." He said, "More and more states are successfully implementing marijuana legalization, and we need to keep learning from their efforts." Any change would require new legislation, which would face opposition in the Republican-controlled legislature. Medical marijuana did pass in 2016 and several cities including Philadelphia have decriminalized possession of small amounts of the drug.

A former Lehigh University student has been charged with poisoning his longtime roommate. 22-year-old Yukai Yang, a Chinese national, is charged with attempted murder and related charges. He had already been charged with ethnic intimidation for writing racist graffiti in their dorm room. Yang's roommate, Juwan Royal, is African American. Last year, Royal contacted authorities when his belongings began to be vandalized with racist messages. During the course of their investigation, officials noticed Royal become very sick. Tests showed that he was suffering from thallium poisoning. Yang, a chemistry major, admitted to police that he purchased the chemical online and planned to use it on himself if he received bad grades. However, it was mixed in food and drinks in the refrigerator shared by the roommates. Royal couldn't understand why he was attacked. The two had been roommates for several years and he thought they got along well. Yang was in the United States on a student visa which has been revoked.
