Bucks County Bomber Charged w/ Child Porn; Ryan Pownall Charges Reduced; Villanova Stabbing Arrest

A Bucks County man who was previously arrested for a series of mysterious explosions earlier this year is now facing child porn charges. 30-year-old David Surman Jr. of Milford Township surrendered himself on Wednesday, 10/10, and was charged with one count of possessing child pornography. Authorities had raided Surman's home and business on June 28th as part of an investigation into explosions being heard in Upper Bucks, Northampton, and Lehigh counties. They found 4 bombs, bomb making chemicals, firearms, and drug paraphernalia. Investigators also discovered a hard drive containing pornographic images and videos of children. Surman Jr. was arraigned on the new charge and new bail was set at 10 percent of $500,000. He had previously made bail over the summer.

UPDATE: Surman Jr's girlfriend, 31-year-old Tina May Smith, has been charged as a co-conspirator in the case of the mysterious explosions. She was arraigned on Friday, 10/12, on felony and misdemeanor conspiracy counts. According to the Bucks County district attorney's office, Smith was driving while Surman Jr threw the devices from the car. That scenario matches a picture taken from Surman's home during a search this summer (see below). She apparently told investigators she was with him on three occasions.

Charges were reduced for a former Philadelphia police officer charged in the fatal shooting of a suspect during a traffic stop in Hunting Park last year. Common Pleas Judge Robert B. Coleman reduced the criminal homicide charge from first-degree murder to third-degree against Ryan Pownall in the death of David Jones. Bail was also granted at $500,000. Pownall will be placed under house arrest after posting bail. He was not present at Thursday's hearing. The case will head straight to trial after the judge ruled on a motion to bypass the preliminary hearing. Both sides seem pleased with the decision. "We are extremely satisfied with this decision," said Pownall's attorney, Fortunato Perri Jr. The Philadelphia District Attorney's office, "Nearly 20 years ago, judges twice tossed [out] murder charges against the last on-duty officer who was charged with homicide," said in a statement. "Judge Coleman's ruling today means that history will not repeat itself and a jury will hear all the evidence in the case." In June 2017, Jones was pulled over by Pownall for illegally riding a dirt bike in the street. Pownall discovered a gun while frisking Jones. After a brief scuffle, Jones began to run away and tossed the gun. That is when Pownall shot him in the back.

One of the three suspects wanted for the stabbing of Villanova University senior last weekend has been arrested. The incident happened just after 2 p.m. Saturday, 10/8, after the student had left Kelly's Taproom on Lancaster Ave in Bryn Mawr. He was walking with a woman when they were approached by the three suspects. A physical confrontation took place and the student was stabbed in the chest. He was taken to Bryn Mawr hospital and is in stable condition. The other two suspects are still at large.

UPDATE: Police now say they have arrested two of the suspects. They have been identified as Antwine Bing and Sterling Frazier-Sallad.
