Allentown Explosion Was Murder-Suicide; Woman Recants Tinder Assault Claims; Upper Darby Escapee

Officials revealed that the car explosion last Saturday night, 9/29, in Allentown was intentionally detonated as part of a planned murder-suicide. ATF Philadelphia Field Division Special Agent in Charge Don Robinson spoke at a press conference on Thursday morning, 10/4. He said that 27-year-old Jacob Schmoyer set off a homemade explosive in the center console killing himself, his 2-year-old son Jonathan "J.J." Schmoyer, and 66-year-old David Hallman. Schmoyer mailed letters to family members and the Allentown Police Department taking blame for the explosion, detailing the components, and indicating he also intended to target Hallman and his son. "We are confident Schmoyer acted alone. He is not involved in any groups. We are confident that this was an isolated incident, a criminal act by Jacob Schmoyer," Robinson said. "He was miserable. The four letters describe a miserable life. He was unhappy with himself."

Cheltenham Police say that the woman who claimed she was sexually attacked by a man she had arranged to meet using the dating app Tinder has recanted part of her story. The woman initially claimed that she was 'lured' to an Elkins Park apartment complex by a man she met on Tinder. When she arrived outside, the woman had told police that the suspect approached her from behind, grabbed her, and forced her to a secluded area where he sexually assaulted her. Police now say the woman admits to making up parts of her story. She told police that she did not use Tinder to meet the man and that she was not lured to the location. She also told police that the man is actually an acquaintance, not a stranger. Police have identified the man and he is cooperating with investigators. "The complainant's initial report to Police generated a great deal of community fear and concern that there was a sexual predator out in the community assaulting women. This investigation has shown that this is not a public safety issue and the community is not in danger," police said in a statement.

A woman who escaped custody in Upper Darby last month has been been arrested and placed back into custody after a car crash in Southwest Philadelphia on Thursday. 27-year-old Carolyn Quiah escaped from a constable at Secane District Court on September 13th. U.S. Marshals tracked her to Center City where they believe she rented a car with a stolen credit card. They spotted her near 15th and Market around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, 10/4, and tried to stop her. Quiah fled in her car and hit a Marshal in the leg. He suffered non life-threatening injuries. A short time later, Quiah struck another vehicle and flipped over at 56th and Whitby in Kingsessing.

The Philadelphia district attorney's office announced a major drug bust in the city's Kensington neighborhood. DA Larry Krasner said that 57 drug dealers were arrested for selling various drugs including fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine. Those dealers were responsible for nearly $5 million in annual revenue. Some of the suspects belong to the Alameda Drug Trafficking Organization, while others are street level dealers. Law enforcement focused on the intersection of Kip and Cambria Streets.
