A couple was caught on video this past Tuesday afternoon, 7/10, catching small birds while sitting on a bench in Washington Square park. The man was throwing food to attract a group of sparrows. The woman leans over and extends her arm slowly before quickly snatching one the birds. She then unties a plastic bag, put the bird inside, and reties the bag. The bird can be seen flapping around inside. There is a city ordinance that says, "Hunting, trapping, chasing or capturing any kind of wildlife, or disturbing any nest(s) or egg(s) is prohibited." However, Washington Square park is part of Independence National Historic Par and is under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. Catching wildlife in the park is also against federal guidelines. A park ranger had made contact with the couple after receiving complaints and made them aware that they were not allowed to trap the birds.

A 95-year-old great-grandfather and a 32-year-old man were injured when someone opened fire into their West Philadelphia home early Thursday morning, 7/12. It happened around 3:15 a.m. on the 5200 block of Rodman Street in the Cobbs Creek neighborhood. The suspect stood on the front porch and fired at lest 5 shots through the front living room window. There were five people inside the home at the time. The 95-year-old was shot in the arm while sitting on the couch. He is in stable condition. The 32-year-old was found at the top of the stairs with a gun shot wound to the chest. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A 2-year-old, her mother, and a 19-year-old man were also in the home but were uninjured. Police do not yet have a motive, but do believe this shooting was intentional and not the result of stray bullets. The 19-year-old man was on house arrest and electronically monitored. He fled the scene after the shooting and police are searching for him.

A Villanova University campus minister has been arrested for receiving sexually explicit images of young children. 51-year-old Timothy O’Connell, associate director of campus ministry at Villanova University, is charged with one count of receipt of child pornography. An FBI investigation into another suspect led federal authorities to O'Connell. He told FBI agents he used the messaging app Kik to receive the images and to talk to other about the child pornography. Villanova has suspended O'Connell and he is barred from campus. He has a hearing on Friday. "Villanova University is appalled and horrified by these allegations. The University has suspended this individual and he is not permitted to return to campus. Villanova is fully cooperating with the FBI in its investigation."
