First Four Thai Soccer Players Rescued; Upper Darby Teen Shot at Party; NJ Couple Dies in Explosion

The first four members of a Thai youth soccer team trapped deep inside a cave have been rescued. The 12 boys and their coach have been trapped there for over two weeks. It could take 4 days to extract all of the them. Thai navy SEALs began the intense rescue operation around 12 midnight EDT Sunday, 7/8. They had to crawl and dive into the cave to the boy's location. There they outfitted the boys with full face masks to breathe. Many of the boys cannot even swim but had to dive and navigate tight passes with the help of the divers. The boys began to emerge on Sunday morning around 8-10 a.m. EDT. Authorities said they had to take 10 hours to rest, recover, and reset for the next rescue run. It takes around 11 hours for rescuers to make the round trip.

A 17-year-old Upper Darby boy was shot and killed outside a party on Saturday night, 7/7. It happened around 10 p.m. on the 500 block of Glendale Road. There were about 30-40 people at a party when a fight broke out between the teen victim and another person. The teen tried to leave the party and run away but was followed outside by 3-4 people. They fired several shots and hit him once in the back. Upper Darby Superintendent Michael Chitwood is asking for anyone who knows something or saw something to contact police. He said, "The thing that amazes me even after all these years is the lack of cooperation you get from people. I’m telling you, 30 to 40 people knew what happened and nobody’s coming forward. I think it’s a disgrace. It’s their neighborhood, not my neighborhood. And they berate the police which is even worse, and all we’re trying to do is help and solve a crime, solve a murder."

An elderly New Jersey couple was killed when their house exploded in Gloucester County early Saturday morning, 7/7. It happened at 6:30 a.m. on the 300 block of Oakwood Drive in Newfield. 73-year-old John Paladino and 72-year-old Carole Paladino were inside when their home was leveled by the blast. It was felt several streets away and debris was scattered across several blocks. Some other nearby homes were also damaged and the shock wave rattled doors, windows, and hanging pictures in the neighborhood. The couple was retired, but John worked as greeter at a nearby mortuary and Carole taught catechism at their church. The fire marshal, state police arson-bomb unit, Franklin Township police department, and the ATF are investigating. Neighbors say that they saw a delivery truck at the home on Friday and that the couple may just have had a new stove installed. The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined.
