Comcast and NBC Universal complete merger

The huge merger deal between Philadelphia based Comcast and GE owned NBC Universal was finally completed yesterday, Friday, Jan 28. Comcast acquired a 51% stake in NBC Universal from GE, to create a nearly $30 billion company. The merger was under tight scrutiny from the FCC and Justice Department but got approval Jan 18, but with a few restrictions, mainly in regards to Comcast's new control of content from NBC and access for emerging services such as Hulu and Netflix streaming.

The new venture will be called NBCUniversal LLC. Along with Comcast's cable, voice, and internet services, it will also have NBC broadcast stations, cable channels such as USA, Bravo, E!, Universal movie studio, Universal theme parks, and NBC television productions such as The Office.

It's no wonder federal regulators were concerned about this deal. One company now controls entertainment content from creation all the way to our TV sets. I can see the scenario sometime in the future, "All my channels are fuzzy but NBC, E!, Bravo, and USA, I guess I'll just have to watch one of those." This is in a way the same argument being made as to why we need net neutrality, different issue, but similiar. At least the feds did see that it would affect Netflix and Hulu and made some restrictions up front to prevent any initial damage.
