Arrest in Radnor Hit-and-Run; Judge Allows 5 Cosby Accusers; Piazza Case, Some Charges Dropped

Police have made an arrest in the deadly hit-and-run in Radnor last week. 30-year-old Kevin Gaughan of Paoli turned himself in at the Radnor Township Municipal Building on Thursday morning. It happened on March 6th on the 500 block of Lancaster Ave just after 8 pm. 69-year-old Fred Gitterman was crossing the road when he was struck. The driver slowed down briefly and then sped off westbound. Glitterman was taken to Bryn Mawr Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Delaware County Assistant District Attorney Katayon Copeland said, "All he needed to do was stop and help. But what he did was the exact opposite... Upon striking the victim, the defendant drove off and 24 minutes later he was at his house filing a fraudulent insurance claim." Gaughan is married with a 2-year-old baby. He posted 10% of $500,000 bail. Gaughn is charged with charged with accidents involving death, tampering with evidence, three counts of insurance fraud and failing to report an accident. He faces up to 20 years if convicted.

The Montgomery County judge in the Bill Cosby case will allow five additional accusers testify next month at his sexual assault retrial. Judge Steven O'Neill ruled on Thursday that five alleged victims of the 80-year-old entertainer will be permitted to take the stand. At the first trial last year, prosecutors were only able to call one additional woman who claimed Cosby assaulted her in the 1990s. That trial ended in a hung jury. Cosby is on trial for the 2004 sexual assault of Andrea Constand. Prosecutors want to show a pattern of assault and abuse. They had requested the inclusion of 19 accusers. Defense lawyers fought the motion arguing that they are "ancient allegations" that cannot be proven and could only confuse and distract the jury. Jury selection begins March 29th and trial is scheduled for April 2nd in Norristown.

Pennsylvania state prosecutors are dropping the most serious assault charges against members of a Penn State fraternity in the death of a pledge during a hazing incident last year. 19-year-old pledge Tim Piazza died after suffering multiple injuries including a fractured skull and ruptured spleen following a night of heavy drinking in February 2017. Beta Theta Pi fraternity members failed to seek medical attention for around 12 hours after Piazza fell down a flight of stairs. The state attorney general's office took over the case after it was referred by the new local district attorney. The attorney general announced on Thursday that it was dropping the felony counts of aggravated assault. It will still pursue charges of involuntary manslaughter against four members. Attorney General Josh Shapiro said, "Our review is ongoing. These charges represent one part of our investigation, and we will have further information to release as our review moves forward." 26 men are accused in the case.
