Chris Christie Signs Bump Stock Bill; Man Charged in Deadly Icy Crash; DE Cop Arrested DUI

Outgoing New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed a bill that bans bump stocks and trigger cranks. The stocks or cranks easily convert a normal semi-automatic rifle into rapid-firing weapon that simulates a fully automatic rifle. They are the same devices used by the gunman in the Las Vegas concert attack. Previously, under NJ law it was not unlawful to own the stock, but you could not legally use them. Under this new Democratic-sponsored bill, it is now illegal to own them. Owners have 90 days to surrender their stocks or trigger cranks. Retailers have 30 days. Sale or possession now carries a 3-5-year sentence and/or a fine of up to $15,000.

A Burlington City man who crashed his car into the icy Delaware River and then fled on foot, leaving his passenger to die, has been charged. 24-year-old Jacob Garrett of the 100 block of Stacy Court in Burlington City is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, causing death while driving with a suspended license and endangering an injured victim. It happened on Sunday around 1 p.m. along River Road in Burlington City. Garrett was speeding along River Road when he hit a parked minivan and veered off into the river. He managed to get out of the car but left 23-year-old Stephanie White of Burlington City inside. Rescue crews were able to get her out of the car and take her to Lourdes Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Garrett was tracked down using Police K-9 and taken into custody.

An off-duty police officer in Delaware is being accused of a litany of charges after he was found passed out behind the wheel at a traffic light with his child in the car. It started on Thursday, Jan. 11 when there was a report of a hit-and-run in the parking lot of McGlynn's Pub and Restaurant 800 North DuPont Highway in Dover. The registration number given by witnesses matched the vehicle of 26-year-old Keith Boris, an one-year officer with the Dover Police Department. Several hours later, police got a call from a motorist about a driver passed out at the wheel. The vehicle was at the intersection of Transportation Circle and South Bay Road. The motorist was able to pull Boris from the car and put it in park. Boris' daughter was inside and unharmed. Boris has been put on administrative leave without pay pending the investigation. He was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Inattentive Driving.
