Philadelphia Population Continues to Grow

After 50 years of declining population, Philadelphia has seen a significant rebound and the future looks bright. According to new population projections from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, the nine-county region will be home to 6.26 million people by 2040, an 11.3 percent increase over the 2010 population of 5.63 million.

Chester and Gloucester are likely to be the fastest-growing counties in the region over the next three decades, while Philadelphia is poised to continue its recent rebound from a half-century of decline.

The planning commission relies on population projections to help it direct federal funding for highway, transit, and other regional projects. The agency is required by the U.S. Department of Transportation to update its long-range plans every four years, and the new population projections are part of that effort.
