Left-hander Cole Hamels and infielder Wilson Valdez have both agreed to one-year contracts with the Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced the deals today. Both players were eligible for salary arbitration but avoided those proceedings by signing these deals.

Cole Hamels, 28, will earn $15 million next season. Last year he was 14-9 with a 2.79 ERA in 31 starts (32 games) for the Phillies. He was also selected to his second All-Star Game and finished 5th in the NL Cy Young voting. Hamels earned a win in 6 scoreless innings in Game 3 of the NLDS against the St. Louis Cardinals to give him the most Phillie postseason wins at 7.

Wilson Valdez, 33, will earn $930,000. He appeared in 99 games last year batting .249 with 14 doubles, four triples, one home run and 30 RBI. Defensively, Valdez was a true utility infielder making 33 starts at second base, 21 at third and 20 at shortstop. He also earned the win in his first career relief appearance on the pitching mound on May 25 against the Cincinnati Reds.

Right fielder Hunter Pence is now the lone Phillie eligible for arbitration.
