At least 8 people were killed and close to a dozen were injured when a man drove a rented truck down a crowded bike path in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon. It happened around 3:05 p.m. on the Hudson River Greenway bike path near the West Side Highway. The man drove a rented Home Depot pickup truck along the path from West Houston to Chambers Streets, or about 14 blocks, hitting many bikers and joggers along the way before purposely slamming into a school bus. The driver jumped out of the truck and according to witnesses yelled "Allahu Akbar." He was holding what turned out to be a pellet gun and paintball gun in each hand before he was shot by police in the abdomen. The suspect was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

The suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov from Uzbekistan. He came to the United States legally in 2010. He has a Florida driver's license but has also stayed in Paterson, New Jersey. A note in or near the truck references ISIS. Authorities believe that he acted alone. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, "At this point, there's no evidence to suggest a wider plot, or a wider scheme." Mayor Bill de Blasio, said, "This was an act of terror and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians."

8 people have been confirmed dead. 11 others have been injured. The school bus was carrying 2 adults and 2 children. The Argentinian Consulate has stated that five friends were among those killed. Hernán Mendoza, Diego Angelini, Alejandro Pagnucco, Ariel Erlij and Hernán Ferruch as well as Martín Ludovico Marro, who was injured, were all in New York celebrating their 30 year graduation reunion. A Belgian man was also killed.

Federal authorities are continuing to investigate.
