A vigil was held on Thursday night for a teenager that was shot and killed in Germantown this past Tuesday. The shooting took place on Tuesday night at around 8:40 pm, killing 16-year-old Jai Custus and injuring three others. The victim's family stated that Custus began to run towards the gunshots to keep his younger cousins out of the way who were with him at the time of the shooting. A bullet then struck Custus in the back, later he was pronounced dead. Police have stated that they have arrested an 18-year-old who was involved in the shooting, but they believe more people could be involved.

City Council members in Philadelphia are now considering a bill that would crack down on "squatters" in Philadelphia. Council members describe squatters as "people who move into a property they have no claim to." Councilman David Oh stated that a local pastor who could not get a squatter to leave after she took up residence illegally inside of the church's parsonage contacted him. Council members say that the bill would define a squatter, lay out a procedure for police to deal with the situation and give a $300-a-day fine for the people who refuse to leave the premises.

The Philadelphia Fire Department has now received a $2.6 Million federal grant to better train firefighters on how to get themselves out of deadly situations. The PFD was given the grant after deficiencies were found in the department's training, especially after the death of Lt. Joyce Craig back in a 2014 fire. Fire Commissioner Adam Theil said the grant will go towards special equipment and training time. Theil stated that each firefighter will be equipped with a bail out rope and harness system. FEMA is now providing the cash for this initiative, Theil also stated that there are other grants in the works.
