Ryan Madson Signs With Cincinnati Reds for $8.5 Million

Ryan Madson will be wearing red next year but it will be for the Cincinnati Reds, not the Philadelphia Phillies. Madson reached an oral agreement for a 1-year contract worth $8.5 million to pitch as their closer next year. He will be replacing Fransico Cordero whose $12 million option was declined, in favor of a $1 million buy out.

Ryan Madson stepped into the closer role for the Phillies in 2011 after Brad Lidge was plagued by injuries. He was 4-2 with a 2.47 ERA, and saved 32 of 34 chances.

In November, the Phillies and Madson nearly reached a deal for 4 years, $44 million but that deal collapsed. Shortly afterward, Philadelphia signed Boston closer, Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year contract worth $50 million. The Phillies seemed to still be interested in keeping Madson, who has been with the organization since being drafted in the 9th round in 1998 and has had success in his carreer has a setup man, but Madson declined arbitration.

In 491 career games, including 18 starts, Madson is 47-30 with a 3.59 ERA and 52 saves. He most probably wants to prove that he can be a year-long closer (with the Reds) and sign a large contract for that role at the end of next year.
