Police Clash with Flash Mob of 500 Teens; West Philly Barricade; Vigil for Bucks County Men

Philadelphia Police confronted a large group of unruly teenagers on Sunday night in Germantown when a neighborhood cookout got out of hand and a flash mob grew to 500 teens through social media. The party began at 6 p.m. at the Lonnie Young Recreation Center on the 1000 block of Chelten Ave. The organizer of the party, Alex Williams, said that at first it was just a peaceful neighborhood party and there were maybe 100 teens. That number jumped when the police arrived around 9:30 p.m. The crowd filled the streets, taunted officers, some jumped on the cruisers. Police say that bottles were thrown. Authorities held back and waited and eventually the crowd dispersed. "There's no reported injuries to police, no reported arrests, and there's no reported injuries to civilians at this time," Capt. Drew Techner with Philadelphia Police said. See video below.

Councilwoman Cindy Bass said the following about the incident Monday: "It is clear that this situation highlights a serious need in the City of Philadelphia. One of the things I hear time and time again from our youth is that they do not have anything to do, especially in the summer. While the City has done a commendable job in providing a wide range of activities and programming, we need to do more. Much more. Could this have been prevented if we had extended recreation center programs into Sunday afternoon/evening? What are we doing to connect our young people to available job opportunities? As both a councilwoman and chair of the committee that oversees the city's parks and recreation system, it is my job to figure out what we need and how to get resources directed to those that need it the most."

Philadelphia Police were engaged in a barricade situation in West Philadelphia this afternoon. It began around 1 p.m. when police were called to the 7400 block of Ruskin Rd for a shooting. One male victim was found shot and the suspect ran into a home on the 7300 block of Malvern Avenue. At 3:50 p.m., police determined that no one was in the house and the shooter got away. No word on the condition of the victim.

A vigil was held on Sunday night at the Garden of Reflection in Lower Makefield Township, Bucks County. Friends, family, and the community participated in the Night of Healing in honor of 22-year-old Mark Sturgis, 21-year-old Tom Meo, 19-year-old Dean Finocchiaro and 19-year-old Jimi Patrick. The four young men were killed just over a week ago on a farm in Solebury Township. The two men responsible are in police custody. The evening featured prayers, music, and a candle lighting. Neshaminy High School is making grief counselors available. Finocchiaro graduated from there last year. Parents and students can call 215-809-6101 to make an appointment.

Tonight, Mostly Cloudy, temperatures in mid 80's this evening in Center City
