New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed a bill on Wednesday legalizing the sale of handheld sparklers and novelty items, just in time for the 4th of July holiday. Anyone 16 and older will now be able to legally purchase handheld and ground-based sparkers and well as novelty items such as party poppers and snappers. All other fireworks remain illegal in New Jersey including both aerial and explosive types. Those include rockets and firecrackers.

A Montgomery County woman has been sentenced to prison for 2 ½ to 6 years following a guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter in her daughter's death. 36-year-old Christina Griffith of Lower Providence was in a King of Prussia motel room in 2015 when her 2-year-old daughter, Trinity, swallowed two pills by accident. Instead of calling 911, Griffith went to sleep. When she awoke, her daughter was dead. Trinity swallowed Subutex (an opioid dependence treatment) and Klonopin (panic disorders/anxiety). Prosecutor Rob Kolansky said she could have been saved if 911 was called immediately.

Seven couples from a New Jersey shore town have been arrested this week in a large scale welfare fraud scheme. Four couples were arrested Monday and three more on Tuesday from Lakewood, NJ. They all belong to a growing Orthodox Jewish community in the area. One couple is actually a rabbi and his wife. The couples misrepresented their incomes and hid assets when applying for various government assistance programs including Medicaid, housing, Social Security and food assistance benefits. They received a combined $2 million that they weren't entitled to.
