A teenager is custody after attempting to suffocate his 7-year-old sister early Wednesday morning. 18-year-old Simere Alfred is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and related offenses. The incident started at 1 a.m. on the 5500 block of North American Street in the Olney section of Philadelphia. Police were called to the location after a woman reported that her son took off with her car. When police arrived the family then noticed the 7-year-old girl was not in her bed. The mother went to the basement and discovered her daughter not breathing with a plastic bag around her head. She ran outside screaming with the girl in her arms. Police began CPR and rushed her to Einstein Medical Center in critical condition. She was transferred to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and is on life support. The child's father says she is brain dead. Meanwhile, police found the stolen vehicle crashed a few blocks away, but the 18-year-old had fled on foot. At around 11:20 a.m., Alfred showed up outside the 35th police district and locked himself inside a police car. He told officers that he had done something stupid.

Two New Jersey detectives were taken to the hospital today after coming into contact with a substance during an investigation today in Cherry Hill. Officers from both Camden County Prosecutor's office and the Cherry Hill Police Department responded to the 200 block of Heritage Road around 9:05 a.m. Wednesday. They found a woman dead inside her home from an apparent overdose. The detectives were exposed to the unknown substance and were treated on scene. They were taken to Cooper University Hospital for observation and have since been released. There is no further danger. First responders around the country are becoming more alert to the dangers of exposure to the drugs they encounter on scene. Sometimes protective gear like masks and gloves are not enough. Powered heroin is often cut with fentanyl, which is a much stronger opioid. It only takes a few grains of that breathed in or absorbed through the skin to have an adverse affect.

A high school teacher in Burlington County, New Jersey, has been arrested for allegedly making 'upskirt' videos of female students. 43-year-old Eric Howell of Maple Shade has been a chemistry teacher at Lenape High School since 2016. He is being charged with endangering the welfare of a child, official misconduct and invasion of privacy. Howell would conceal a camera inside an empty coconut water box and place it on the outside of his brief case. He would hold his bag in such a manner so that he could position the camera to film up the skirts or shorts of female students as they passed in the hallways. An investigation began on May 2 when one student noticed Howell's suspicious behavior and reported it. The investigation is ongoing. Police are analyzing digital storage devices obtained in a search of his home. Howell has a court appearance on Thursday.

The Lenape Regional High School District released the following statement:

“We reported this matter to the local authorities as soon as we were made aware of it. We immediately contacted and communicated with specific parents throughout the investigation by the authorities, offered counseling to any students and staff member with a concern regarding this issue, and did not permit this individual on our school grounds or at any LRHSD events. We commend the Medford Township Police Department and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office for their swift attention to this matter, helping to ensure the security, health and safety of our students, staff and entire school community.”
