Zoning Board Approves Billboards at 11 PPA Lots; Man Killed on Black Horse Pike; SRC Seat Filled

The Philadelphia Zoning Board approved billboards on 11 Parking Authority garages and lots in a vote on Wednesday afternoon. The PPA says the 6x12 foot signs will replace similar smaller signs that were previously at the locations. Revenue will help defray the cost of upkeep of the neighborhood parking lots. Non-profit policy group 5th Square raised objections to the signs and the approval process. Some signs will be placed near homes and parks and may be illuminated. Also, the PPA went straight to the Zoning Board and was not subject to a community hearing process. 5th Square obtained nearly 1,000 signatures in an online petition. They say they will appeal the board's decision in Commonwealth Court.

One man was killed and another injured after a crash involving cars racing on the Black Horse Pike in South Jersey. It happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday on the Black Horse Pike near Coles Mill Road in Monroe Township, Gloucester County. Two vehicles were traveling westbound in excess of 100 mph and may have been drag racing. The speed limit on the road is 55 mph. 33-year-old Matthew Anderson of Pemberton, N.J. was traveling eastbound and attempted to turn left into a driveway. Anderson's car was struck on the passenger side by one of the speeding vehicles and thrown off the road and onto it's side. Anderson was killed. A 26-year-old passenger in the other car had lower leg injuries. Police are continuing to investigate. Charges are pending.

The Pennsylvania Senate has confirmed the nomination of Estelle Richman to the Philadelphia School Reform Commission. Richman was nominated by Governor Tom Wolf back in October. This unanimous confirmation fills the fifth and final seat on the SRC. Richman is the former state welfare secretary and was the chief operating officer of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under Obama.
