Philadelphia's historic Metropolitan Opera House on North Broad Street is officially set to be restored and renovated as a live music venue. Developer Eric Blumenfeld, who is bringing the nearby Divine Lorraine Hotel back to life, has partnered with concert promoter Live Nation to refurbish the block-long building at Broad and Poplar for $45 million. Construction is slated to start in June and it should be ready to open by the end of 2018.

The building was built in 1908 by Oscar Hammerstein, grandfather of famed lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, as the Philadelphia Opera House. It was the largest theater in the world at the time and held 4,000 people. Over the years it has also shown movies, hosted basketball games and boxing matches, put on the circus, and most recently was a house of worship. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The new venue will host a variety of acts. Geoff Gordon, regional president of Live Nation, says to expect everything from R&B stars Mary J. Blige and Jill Scott, comedians Louis CK and Kevin Hart, to electronic/dance acts and rock bands. There will be about one to two shows booked per week. The 110,000-square-foot theater will be fitted to hold 3,500 seats with various configurations.
