New Philly Opioid Media Campaign; Person Killed by Train in Jenkintown; Zero Arrests at NFL Draft

The Philadelphia Health Department has released a new media campaign aimed at bringing awareness to and preventing opioid addiction. The new campaign is called "Don't Take The Risk." The campaign features videos of people affected by the opioid epidemic and has them sharing their heartbreaking stories about addiction. Officials want to make people aware that powerful opioid prescription drugs given to patients by doctors after surgery, injury, or for other pain management can be dangerous and addictive. Patients often become unwittingly addicted to these pills and then turn to heroin on the street because it is cheaper and easier to find. 907 people died from drug overdoses in Philadelphia in 2016, up from 700 in 2015. That is three times the number of people that died from homicide in the city last year. Health officials are also working with doctors trying to get them to prescribe less. See video below.

A person was struck and killed by a SEPTA Regional Rail train this afternoon in Jenkintown, Montgomery County. It happened just before 2 p.m. on the West Trenton line just south of the Rydal Station. The train was heading into Center City. There is no word on why the person was on the tracks at the time. Service on the West Trenton line was suspended while police investigated, it has since resumed with delays.

Philadelphia was on it's best behavior during the NFL Draft 2017. According to the Philadelphia Police, there were zero arrests and zero citations issued from Thursday - Saturday. An estimated 250,000 fans converged on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway over those three days. That comes along way from having a dedicated court room in the basement of the Vet. Last year during the Democratic National Convention, 106 protesters were issued citations. Even during Pope Francis' visit for the World Meeting of Families in 2015 there were 3 arrests.

Tonight, Mostly Cloudy, Chance of Thunderstorm, Temperatures in the mid 70's this evening in Center City
