Suspicious Container Found In N. Philly; Phila. Teachers Plan Strike; DA William Pre-Trial Update

Philadelphia Police responded after a large suspicious container was found on the highway in North Philadelphia on Sunday. The container was found on the 2000 block of West York Street. Police say when they arrived on the scene, they found the container which smelled of gasoline and had an object on it that looked like a firecracker. The Bomb Squad later arrived on the scene and was able to clear up the situation before 4:30 pm. Residents in the area were evacuated for their safety, but were later told to return after the situation was cleared up. Police are still investigating on how the device ended up on the street.

Philadelphia School District teachers have planned Monday as a "Day of Action" to address their lack of pay. Philadelphia teachers have been working out their contracts over the past few years to try and get a pay raise, they say they have not received a contract renewal in 4 years, and a pay raise in 5 year. Last week a banner was flown over the NFL Draft area that shamed the superintendent, SRC, and the mayor stating that they supported sports but not their teachers. The teachers have stated that they will be using their personal days to call off and are planning to picket outside of their schools. The Philadelphia School District will still remain open on Monday.

As the Federal Courts closed this weekend both sides in the case of District Attorney Seth Williams presented new information in the case. It is now apparent that Williams' email is at the top of the case. A Federal Judge ordered the DA's office to allow access to his city-issued account, even though there is confidential material in the email account. The DA's office stated that it could breach important information, but prosecutors wrote a 51-page letter saying that they could filter through the emails using keywords to find the evidence. They were granted their request. Williams' lawyer has stated that they will be ready for trial in exactly a month.
