The standoff between authorities and a suspect in the murder of a Delaware State Trooper ended this morning. Officials say that the suspect exited the house around 9:17 a.m. Thursday and 'engaged police.' Law enforcement then shot him. He was pronounced dead at 9:29 a.m. The barricade situation started on Wednesday afternoon on the 500 block of St. Michaels Drive in the Brick Mill Farms Development in Middletown, DE. The suspect refused orders and fired at police outside. At 8:22 p.m., the Explosives Ordinance Disposal Unit utilized an explosive breeching charge on the front door, but did not enter. Around 4 a.m., the suspect began shooting again. Police explosively breached numerous windows, but again did not enter.

It started around noon on Wednesday at the Wawa store on Pulaski Highway (Route 40) near Salem Church Road in Bear, DE. Delaware State Trooper Cpl. Stephen J. Ballard was shot and later died at the hospital. The 32-year-old was an 8.5-year veteran of the Delaware State Police and was assigned to patrol at Troop 2, Glasgow.
