Cardinal John Foley passed away early Sunday morning at the Villa St. Joseph retirement home at age 76. He was battling leukemia.

Foley was appointed to lead the Pontifical Council of Social Communications in 1984 by Pope John Paul II to help get the church's message out through the media.

He was most widely known to Americans as the voice of masses broadcast from the Vatican such as the midnight Christmas mass.

He was also named the Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007.

Foley born born in Darby, PA and graduated from St. Joe's in 1957. He was ordained in 1962. He also earned a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University.

Foley was always known for his media expertise, humor, and ease at engaging the press and public. He worked as the editor-in-chief of the The Catholic Standard & Times from 1970-1984 and also co-hosted and co-produced the Catholic Hour on WFIL radio.

"He was a gifted evangelizer, explaining Catholic teaching and practice clearly and thoroughly and often with a self-deprecating humor," Archbishop Edwin O'Brien, who replaced Foley this year as leader of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, said. "He has long been regarded as the patriarch of the American Catholic press."

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Cardinal John Foley," said Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput. "Cardinal Foley was a man of great apostolic energy. Anyone who met him was immediately aware of his intense love for the church and his zeal for communicating the Gospel. By the sheer force of his personality, he drew people to the faith and to himself."
