Philly Smells Like Rotten Eggs; Two Women Arrested in Trenton Lyft Shooting; Fatal Motorcycle Crash

Many Philadelphia residents have been reporting a 'rotten eggs' smell over parts of the city from Port Richmond through Center City and across South Philadelphia. The strong sulfur-like odor has prompted many people to call authorities worried about a potential gas leak or other danger. PGW investigated the source of the smell and determined that there is no danger and that there are no gas leaks or elevated levels of natural gas in the air. It may have been a release of a sulfur-based additive called mercaptan used to make normally odorless natural gas detectible. Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) is still trying to determine the exact cause of the smell as there have been some conflicting reports of it's source. The smell also has been reported into Northeast Philadelphia and lower Bucks County as winds are driving it northward.

UPDATE: Authorities determined the smell originated from the PBF Energy plant in Paulsboro, Gloucester County. The refinery released 130 pounds of Sulfer Dioxide and 9 pounds of Hydrogen Sulfide into the air on Friday evening. Those levels were below federal reporting guidelines. The refinery temporarily lost power around 8 p.m. causing the release of gases.

Two woman have been arrested and charged as accomplices in the fatal shooting of a woman riding in a Lyft in Trenton last month. 32-year-old Kasey DeZolt of Morrisville, PA, was arrested on Thursday at home and 31-year-old Dominique Richter of Hamilton, NJ, was arrested on Wednesday in Trenton. Both have been charged with murder and are being held on $1 million bail. On November 30th, an unknown gunman opened up the back door of a Lyft vehicle and demanded money from the three passengers and the driver. A gunshot went off and 27-year-old Amber Dudley of Collingswood was shot in the torso. She died at the hospital. The gunman remains on the loose.

A man died following a crash in the city's Frankford section on Friday night. The 44-year-old man was riding a motorcycle and collided with a SEPTA CCT minibus around 5:30 p.m. It happened on the 5300 block of Penn Street. The van was on Bridge Street making a left onto Penn Street when the motorcycle crashed into the rear of the bus. The man was taken to Aria Health-Torresdale Campus where he was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. Police are still investigating the accident. The man's identity has not been released.
