Italy Quake Death Toll Rising; Camden Child Caught in Crossfire; Manayunk Police Officer Hit and Run

The death toll from the earthquakes in Italy has more than tripled since yesterday. More the 240 people are now confirmed dead. Rescue crews aided by sniffer dogs are digging through crumbled homes looking for survivors of the magnitude 6 quake that struck at 3:36 a.m. Wednesday. At least 470 aftershocks have since rattled the area -- one as strong as magnitude 5.1. After a night of uninterrupted, flood-lit search efforts, firefighters and rescue crews worked in teams around the hard-hit area in central Italy, pulling chunks of cement, rock and metal from mounds of rubble where homes once stood, searching for signs of life.

An 8-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was shot in the head by a stray bullet while across the street from her home in Camden. Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson said the gunfire broke out at around 8:30pm Wednesday near Spruce and S. 8th streets. That’s when several armed men opened fire on an intended target. He said the girl was unfortunately caught in the crossfire, taken to the hospital for emergency surgery, and is in critical condition. There is now a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction on those responsible for the shooting.

A Philadelphia police sergeant is recovering from some serious injuries after authorities say he was struck by a hit-and-run driver during a traffic stop. On impact he was thrown 15 feet into the air. It happened just before 1am Thursday in Manayunk, at the intersection of Main Street and Shurs Lane. Police say the sergeant was talking to an officer who was in a cruiser when the driver of a Toyota RAV4 hit him at a high rate of speed, damaged the cruiser and took off.

UPDATE: Officers in Roxborough stopped the suspected driver about a mile away from the incident. The 21-year-old was taken into custody. He is suspected of driving under the influence.
