Nutter Accused of Financial Mismanagement

Former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is currently defending his administration against claims of his misuse of finances. City Controller Alan Butkovitz accused Nutter of financial mismanagement. The spending in question was in regards to both trips and special projects from a special fund which drew in money from the Philadelphia Marathon. Michael Nutter fired back at Butkovitz calling him a "liar, snake and a hypocrite."

The Mayor's Fund manages $7-10 million annually for city programs that promote tourism, business and economic development, education, culture, and job growth. Its revenue comes from the Philadelphia marathon. Butkovitz says that there was a reserve account used to fund $380,000 in questionable expenses. Those included $51,000 for a trip to Rome for the mayor and staff to plan the Pope's visit, $52,000 for hotels for an unnamed group, $11,000 for an open bar event, and $100,000 in credit card expenses.

Mayor Nutter says that all of those expenses were proper and for approved purposes. He called out Butkovitz for not talking to himself or Desiree Peterkin Bell, the chair of the Mayor's Fund under Nutter, before releasing "this slanderous, libelous, and vicious bile from his mouth." Desiree Peterkin Bell says that all expenditures were signed off by the fund's executive director, Ashley Del Bianco, and not just approved by her. Butkovitz is open to hearing from both Butter and Peterkin Bell about the matter.
