The defense rested on Friday without calling any witnesses in the obstruction and perjury case against Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane. Montgomery County judge Wendy Demchick Alloy asked Kane if she was going to take the stand. Kane said, “I don’t believe it’s necessary for me to testify on my own behalf.” The jury was sent home for the weekend. They'll hear closing arguments on Monday morning before being sent off to deliberations.

Philadelphia Police announced two separate $10,000 rewards for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in shootings involving 6-year-old children in Germantown this week. On Tuesday evening around 7 p.m. a 6-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet on the 2000 block of West Chelten Avenue. On Thursday evening, 6-year-old Mahaj Brown was shot in the chest and leg while sitting in a car with his godfather. They were caught in a barrage of bullets. He was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and had surgery. Call 215.686.TIPS (8477) or

Joey Merlino has been granted bail on $5 million by a federal judge in Florida and will be released from custody. Merlino will have to wear an ankle bracelet and stay in his Boca Raton home. He will be allowed to work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at his local restaurant, Merlino's, and travel to eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. One specific approved trip is to his daughters' university for parents' weekend this fall. Merlino has been charged along with dozens of others in a large organized crime crackdown. He was specifically charged for his part in a health care fraud scheme. He faces up to 20 years if convicted. Merlino had served 12 years in prison for a racketeering case in Philadelphia.
