The longtime U.S. Congressman, Representative Chaka Fattah, from Pennsylvania has been convicted in a federal racketeering case stemming from an illegal campaign loan and misuse of federal grants and non-profit loans. Fattah was found guilty on all counts including racketeering, fraud, and money laundering. His co-defendants were found guilty on some of the counts against them. The majority of the case was centered around a $1 million illegal campaign loan related to Fattah's failed 2007 Philadelphia mayoral bid and his efforts to repay it. Fattah has been in Congress since 1995. He lost his reelection bid at the May primary. He will remain free on bail until sentencing on October 4th. According to the House Code of Conduct, a member that has been convicted of a crime that carries a sentence of 2 or more years cannot vote.

Delaware County's Office of Services for the Aging distributed 300 box fans this morning from their offices in Eddystone. The fans were heading to 8 senior centers around the county to be given for free to senior citizens as the summer season's heat and humidity starts to rise. This is just part of the county's heat plan which includes extended hours at air conditioned senior centers and shelters as well as welfare checks for vulnerable citizens. If you do use a fan to keep cool, make sure to leave a window open for ventilation to avoid the convection effect. To find out more about current heat advisories and information, contact the Heat Information Line at (610) 872-1558. If you need additional assistance, contact a COSA staff member by calling the Information and Assistance service at (610) 490-1300.

Two women have been charged with the murder of a female found handcuffed, stabbed, shot, and abandoned in Fairmount Park near the Mann Center last week. 39-year-old Shavon Armstrong, also known as Palliadium Smith, of Wilkes Barre, PA, turned herself in to Philadelphia Police over the weekend. 28-year-old Shintele Smith of South Bialy Street was arrested and charged today. Both have been charged with murder, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, robbery, and related offenses in the death of their friend 26-year-old Toy Charda Bryant. Bryant's body was found by a young couple on the 5300 block of Georges Hill Drive in Fairmount Park around 8:14 a.m. June 14. Authorities believe that she owed the two females $800 and was kidnapped, tortured, and killed because she could not repay the money.

Tonight,
Party cloudy, chance of a thunderstorm, temperatures in the upper 70s this evening in Center City.
