Phillies Draft High School Senior; Soda Tax Impact; SEPTA's New Fare Card

The Phillies used their #1 pick in the draft last night to select California high school senior Mickey Moniak. The 18 year old center fielder is an outstanding hitter with great speed, but will first head to college at UCLA and won't get into Phillies camp until 2020.

Philadelphia's soda tax cleared a City Council committee Wednesday night and is poised for a final vote next week. The tax is 1.5 cents per ounce, adding 18 cents to the cost of a 12 ounce can, $1 to a 2-liter bottle, and $2.16 to a 12-pack. Tax proceeds will fund education and other government shortfalls in the city.

SEPTA's new fare card gets rolled out on Monday. SEPTA Key, the electronic fare card that will eventually replace passes and tokens on the region's public transportation network, is being made available to 10,000 people - first come, first served. Kiosks are in six stops on the Market Frankford Line and six stops on the Broad Street Line and can be reloaded like an EZ Pass.

Sports
The Phillies are in Washington tonight with the Nationals.

Philadelphia Weather
Sunny today. 80 in Center City.
