Fire Kills Elderly Vet; Philly Woman Charged with Murdering Children; Soda Tax Victory for Health

An overnight fire killed an elderly veteran who couldn't get out of his home. World War II vet Benjamin Boone, who was in his 90s and known as Uncle BB to the S. Taylor Street neighborhood, was trapped on the second floor. Firefighters got to the scene in Point Breeze, but they could not get him out. There was no evidence of a working smoke detector.

A 40 year old Philadelphia woman is accused of killing her 7-month-old son and 3-year-old daughter during a visit to South Florida. Police records show that Sophia Hines was booked into the Broward County Jail today and charged with two counts of premeditated murder. The children were found inside an apartment in Miramar. a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. The cause of death is unknown.

Philadelphia City Council's vote to advance the first big-city levy on soda is being hailed as a tipping point by public health advocates who say, the arc of history is bending toward public health. Health advocates have been pushing for years for taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages as a way to attack epidemics of obesity and diabetes.
