Oil Slick on Schuylkill; Road Rage Shooting on 476; Penn State Molestation Charges from the 1970s

Emergency crews found a green, oily sheen on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, the second time this week there appears to have been some kind of spill into the river. The substance spotted Thursday night smelled like diesel fuel, but authorities were still trying to figure out what it was and where it came from. City fire crews and U.S. Coast Guard officials are investigating.

Pennsylvania State Police say a motorist traveling on the Blue Route fired a gun at another man's car Thursday afternoon in Montgomery County. Shortly before 3 p.m., a man fired one shot at the victim's car, striking the front passenger door, while both vehicles were traveling north on Instate 476 in West Conshohocken. The target, described only as a 26-year-old man, was not hurt. Investigators believed the shooting was sparked by road rage.

New information surfacing suggests Penn State University paid settlements to end child assault claims that Joe Paterno and other coaches at the school knew about as early as the 1970s. According to court filings and a person familiar with the payouts, Jerry Sandusky was assaulting children sexually in the mid-70’s. One accuser was a child when he allegedly told Paterno in 1976 that Sandusky had molested him. Two assistant coaches witnessed Sandusky's misconduct with children in the 1980s, and a former athletic director also was told about sexual contact between the former assistant coach and a child, according to the filings. The claims were never aired or proven at trial. But the allegations and settlements, cited in a Philadelphia judge's ruling in a related case this week, suggest for the first time that Sandusky's sexual misconduct was known to some on campus decades before he first drew law enforcement scrutiny.
