iRadioPhilly was on hand once again Friday night (4/8/16) at Haverford High School for the 37th Annual Evening of Jazz. The quality of musicianship was so impressive; one forgets that some of these performers are only in sixth grade! The evening featured five jazz bands - two from Haverford Middle School and three from the Haverford High School. As the evening wore on, the performances only got better.

Professional resident Jazz musician Dick Oatts, who has been working with the students since December, addressed the audience and commented that Haverford's music program is the best he has seen anywhere in the country. Oatts joined each of the groups on stage and accompanied with alto sax. Oatts encouraged continued support for the program and described the progress he witnessed during his time working with the students.

Saxophone master, Dick Oatts participation in the program was made possible by the Haverford Jazz Residency Campaign, a non-profit 501c3 dedicated to improving the school district’s music program. Organization President John Ryan thanked supporters for contributing to the campaign which hires professional musicians to visit the school and mentor the students.

The best of the best were featured in the High School Jazz Ensemble with standout student performances by Jesse Loewy on guitar and Stephen Lang on tenor sax. Director Michael Fein celebrated the graduation of his senior class introducing each and announcing what's next scholastically for his talented group.

The Haverford High School Jazz Ensemble will open the third annual Haverford Spring Fest presented by ACME Markets on Sunday May 1, 2016 on Brookline Boulevard in Havertown. iRadioPhilly.com will stream the entire festival around the world on the Live Broadcast channel the day of the event.

iRadioPhilly’s ON-DEMAND podcast of the 37th annual Evening of Jazz includes interviews with Directors Dr. Drew Shanefield, Mr. Alex Gittelman and Mr. Michael Fein.
