Philadelphia School Scheduled to Close Is Fighting Back

Philadelphia School District officials recommended that Stanton Elementary School at 17th and Christian, as well as eight other city schools be closed. In Philadelphia's schools there are thousands of surplus seats, financial problems, and aging buildings. Teachers and students at Stanton are fighting to keep it open claiming academic success and happy students and teachers.

Stanton, K to 8, offers programs like violin classes, African drumming, pottery, Shakespearean drama, and dance.

Now Stanton's community is talking to politicians, making signs, and asking for meetings with district officials.

Stanton, at 17th and Christian Streets, is small, with 240 students in kindergarten to eighth grade. More than 90 percent of the students are poor, and 14 percent require special-education services.
