Kutztown Delays Banning Rebel Flags; Meat on Muslim Man's Steps; Schools Running Out of Cash

Kutztown University has pulled back a plan to bar students from displaying what it called "distasteful" and "demeaning" symbols such as the Confederate flag and swastikas in residence halls and common areas. Kutztown University lawyers asked officials to hold off because of concerns about its constitutionality. Instead, officials vowed to "educate" students and others about "the historical and modern context for these symbols."

Philadelphia Police and the Department of Homeland Security are investigating a report of "meat" left outside the home of a Muslim man in the city’s East Mt. Airy section. A slab of meat wrapped in a Muslim newspaper along with a piece of paper describing “women being cursed” were discovered on the steps of a midblock rowhome. Philadelphia Police were called to the scene to investigate. Homeland Security arrived as well. Police are downplaying the idea of a hate crime, and leaning toward the theory that resident Tyree Price may have been the target in a domestic dispute.

With no new state budget in Pennsylvania, the money is running dry in the Philadelphia School District, which educates about 130,000 students. In a letter sent to staff Tuesday night, Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. said the school system could run out of money on January 29 without a new state budget. After that date, Hite says, "our ability to keep schools open, issue paychecks and pay bills is uncertain. The prospect of running out of operating funds is dire."
