Libya's Dictator Muammar Qaddafi is Dead

After Libyan fighters captured Sirte, Qaddafi's hometown, early Thursday, two months after the fall of Tripoli, the former dictator Muammar Qaddafi has been killed by soldiers.

"We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Muammar Qaddafi has been killed," Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril confirmed.

The news has brought celebrations throughout the country that the dictator ruled since 1969 when he seized power in a military coup. This begins the next stage of the Libyan liberation of rebuilding and reforming. An overwhelming majority of the population has only lived under Qaddafi's 42 year rule, the median age is only 24. The National Transitional Council formed this year during the revolution will most certainly look the the rest of the world for help and answers as a new government can be created.

President Barack Obama said Gadhafi's death "marks the end of a long and painful chapter for the people of Libya." The people Libya of, he said, now have the opportunity to "determine their own destiny" and form "a new and democratic Libya."

"Today we can definitively say that the Gadhafi regime has come to an end," he said.
