Manayunk Bridge Trail Now Open; Inquirer and Daily News to Merge; Officer Injured in West Philly

The Manayunk Bridge Trail over the Schuylkill River opened today for the first time in almost 30 years. The bridge trail is .6 miles long and open exclusively for bicycles and pedestrians. It connects Lower Merion's Cynwyd Heritage Trail with the Schuylkill River Trail and Main Street in Manayunk. The construction took 4 years and cost $5.76 million. Also known as the Manayunk Viaduct, the bridge was built as a railroad bridge in 1918 and was closed in 1986.

The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News will merge newsrooms but still put out two newspapers. This consolidation will also include the digital operation of philly.com. An unknown number jobs will be cut from the operation. Publisher Terrance Egger said the move will save Philadelphia Media Network $5-6 million. Owner H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest said the merger will make the company more efficient. Instead of sending two reporters to a story, only one will go. This will make it hard for the two papers to keep their own voice. They are also looking into charging for their online products.

A police officer was injured this afternoon while investigating a road rage incident in West Philadelphia. It happened at 1:30 p.m. Friday at 55th and Pine Streets. Officers witnessed the suspect smash a parked car's window. Several officers gave chase on foot. When they caught up to him a struggle ensued. That's when a police cruiser struck the officer in the leg. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in stable condition. The suspect is in custody. He is charged with reckless endangerment of an officer and vandalism.

Tonight,
Clear skies, temperatures in the mid/low 50's this evening in Center City
