Bicycle Race Cost to Taxpayers; Lower Merion Needs Firefighters; Camden Gets Obama's Attention

Why are Philadelphia taxpayers picking up the tab for the bike race? That's the question being raised after years of private sponsor funding, the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic featuring the famed Manayunk Wall, was formally taken over by the city. The cost to taxpayers is over $1 million, 5 times the taxpayer tab over 2014 when the city kicked in only $200,000.

The Lower Merion Fire Department has launched a campaign to recruit volunteer firefighters. The seven independent fire companies that serve Lower Merion and Narberth are staffed by 14 professionals and about 200 volunteers - residents who often have other jobs and respond to emergency calls in their free time. The department launched a recruitment website, JoinLMFD.org, and is reaching out to potential volunteers on college campuses, at civic events, and through local businesses.

Camden got recognition from President Obama last week at a White House forum on reforming the criminal justice system. Praising the department's use of ice cream trucks and foot patrols to reach out to residents, Obama praised Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson during a panel discussion on criminal justice, calling his department "a great example of community policing" that is "regaining trust from the community."
