Snake on a Bus; Fundraising for Homeless Family; St. Mary in Manayunk to Close

Panic swept through a Route 52 SEPTA bus yesterday when a young man on board accidentally let loose a pet boa constrictor (pictured). The snake, named Red slithered his way from under his owner’s jacket and into a compartment inside a seat. Amid the screams, the driver pulled over and evacuated the bus about 3 pm at 52nd Street and Westminster Avenue. The non-venomous snake was retrieved and SEPTA will decide whether or not to press charges.

Nearly $8,000 has been raised so far for a homeless couple whose two children were taken away from them over the weekend after their 2-year-old son was found wandering alone in Center City's LOVE Park late Friday. Chosen 300 Ministries said it hopes to raise $12,000 to get the family an apartment for a year and allow the parents and their children to be reunited. Brian Jenkins, Chosen 300's executive director, said this morning it had raised $7,800 so far.

Another church is closing. November 1st, St. Mary of the Assumption in Manayunk will no longer serve as a worship site and close as a Roman Catholic church. The archdiocese cited financial problems and lack of use. In July 2012, St. Mary and St. Josaphat merged but despite the merger, the St. Mary building remained an infrequent worship site. St. Mary was founded as an ethnic German parish in 1849.
