NBC10 Strike; Christie Demands Margate Land for Dune Protection; Satullo to Committee of Seventy

The strike by 65 NBC10 camera operators and broadcast technicians is getting tense. Philadelphia's #2 local news station posted on job sites to hire replacement workers. Meanwhile, IBEW Local 98 has targeted Comcast, which owns NBC10 through its NBCUniversal subsidiary, as a strike tactic. The union has picketed the Comcast Center and posted an inflatable rat outside its doors.

New Jersey Governor Christie called Margate "selfish" for refusing to give up land needed for the state's dune project. Now Margate has no choice. The state filed an eminent domain action against the City of Margate to gain access to city-owned beachfront easements needed for the project. The city's opposition had caused the Army Corps of Engineers to abort plans for dunes for Ventnor, Margate, and Longport. Margate voters have opposed dunes and authorized their government to wage a legal battle against the state.

The former head of news at WHYY, who was ousted last month, will join the Committee of Seventy, Philadelphia’s government watchdog group. Chris Satullo will be a Civic Engagement Consultant to help bridge government and civic innovation, according to Committee leader, David Thornburgh. Satullo was replaced at WHYY after disputes with his bosses. Satullo has been credited with building the news operation at WHYY, adding websites and programs including NewsWorks.
