Stormy Weather; Pope Visit Expense Reimbursement; PA Christmas Tree for White House

The Philadelphia area's first serious hurricane scare in three years has meteorologists and emergency management officials warning that "dangerous" conditions are building and major flooding could arrive by the end of the week. That would be before the potential main event - Hurricane Joaquin gets anywhere near here. More flooding is possible early next week. The threats include heavy rains, flash flooding, widespread river flooding, beach erosion, and power-line-ripping winds.

Now that the Pope has gone, who will pick up the tab? Some towns just outside Philadelphia are still totaling overtime and expenses from the papal visit - likely to total hundreds of thousands of dollars. The World Meeting of Families will reimburse only the City of Philadelphia for costs associated with hosting Pope Francis, according to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Other affected municipalities - including Lower Merion, where the pope stayed at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, and other townships where visitors packed SEPTA stations - have to look elsewhere, most likely the State for funding.

This year's White House Christmas tree will again come from Carbon County Pennsylvania. White House officials were at Bustard's Christmas Trees in Towamensing Township on Wednesday, choosing the balsam fir to be used this year. Last year, another Carbon County grower, Crystal Springs Tree Farm, supplied the White House tree. Bustard's was chosen this year because the company won the 2015 Grand National Championship at the National Christmas Tree Growers Convention. The tree will be placed in the Blue Room of the White house.
