Pope Francis Comments Irritate Abuse Victims; City Hall Closes; Parkway Secure Perimeter

In Washington yesterday Pope Francis irritated victims of Roman Catholic clergy sex abuse when he praised a gathering of U.S. bishops for their "courage" in handling the crisis, and consoled them for how stressful it had been. He also insisted that sex abuse at the hands of clergy must never happen again. His remarks brought this retort from the National Survivor Advocates Coalition: "The bishops are poster boys for the fainthearted and timid. They have been cowards in the face of rape and sodomy of innocent children."

For security purposes during the Papal visit, Philadelphia City Hall closed this morning and will not reopen until Tuesday morning, halting some government functions. Residents will be unable to obtain marriage licenses, copies of deeds, access to City Council offices for constituent services, or other services. Also closed will be tours of City Hall, including the ride to the tower observation deck.

Tonight at 10 pm the secure perimeter and the secure vehicle perimeter will be set up from the art museum east to 12th Street. Cars will not be allowed in the area. Residents who obtained a permit from the Philadelphia Parking Authority for a paid space during the papal visit must move their cars to a garage. At 6 am Friday, metal detectors open along the parkway. People will be able to enter the secure perimeter from 20th Street east to 12th Street after being screened.

iRadioPhilly will carry LIVE BROADCASTS all week from the World Meeting of Families Events, Papal speeches, Festival Concert and the Papal Mass. For more information, go to WMOF and Papal Visit Broadcasts
