Pope Francis Visit Presents Challenges for City, Businesses, and Residents

Road closures and massive security surrounding the visit of Pope Francis in September will force many to change their plans for that weekend. The Secret Service has informed couples who had weddings and reception plans in the city that they would have to cancel and reschedule. Businesses will have to close with the shutdown of the Ben Franklin Bridge and major arteries around the city.

It will be the biggest event in the history of Philadelphia and it comes with challenges. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter described the papal visit as a "joyful public event," an "incredible moment for the city," and an opportunity for the city to "shine on the international stage." He even compared the papal visit to the New Testament account of Jesus feeding the masses with a few loaves and fishes. He said, "The Vatican looked all over the world and the United States, and they chose our city for this event."

Philadelphia is hoping that the inconvenience caused by bridge and road closures will help accommodate visitors, not keep them away during the papal visit. In 1976, in preparation for the much-anticipated Bicentennial celebration, then-mayor Frank Rizzo seemed paranoid, warning of violent "leftist" demonstrations and calling for 15,000 federal troops to keep order. The troops didn't come, but unfortunately, neither did the people. If you plan to be in Philly that weekend in September, bring your walking shoes.
