Kenney Comments on Waldron Firing; NAACP Conference; Wolf Vetoes Pension Reform Plan

Democratic mayoral hopeful Jim Kenney has commented on the firing of a same-sex marriage faculty member at Waldron-Mercy Academy. Margie Winters was fired by the school after a dispute over curriculum. Kenney contends "cowardly men" at the Archdiocese made the call. Spokesman for the Archdiocese, Ken Gavin says the personnel decision was made by Waldron, not the Archdiocese.

The NAACP will be in Philadelphia this weekend for a convention that will attract 8,000 people. The conference comes at a time when Black churches are burning and confederate flag arguments are grabbing headlines across the country. The theme of the conference is “Pursuing Liberty in the Face of Injustice.”

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has vetoed the pension reform plan, the third piece of budget bills. Wolf says he understands the need to reign in skyrocketing public employee pensions, but the plan has no immediate cost savings for taxpayers. Republicans accuse Wolf of campaign-style negative attacks and say Wolf’s plan needs $8 billion in tax increases.
