At 9th and Passayunk, across from Pat's King of Steaks in South Philly, lives one of the Mural Arts Program's most seen and recognizable murals. People from all over the world come through this part of town to get a cheese steak or visit the Italian Market and see the mural. It features portraits of Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon, Chubby Checker, Fabian, Eddie Fisher, Al Martino, and DJ Jerry Blavat. All of them are from the golden age of Philadelphia entertainers of the 50's and 60's. The mural however is cracking, chipping, and falling down and was slated to be retired with 'dignity' with a whitewash this spring. Once some of the featured artists heard about the retirement plans, they contacted Councilman Mark Squila and Mural Arts founder and executive director Jane Golden to come up with a new plan. Rydell, Avalon, Checker, and Martino's daughter all spoke up. Right now a group has formed that includes Blavat that is trying to raise $70,000. They'll pick a new location and an artist's design to put up a new mural as a tribute to the stars of South Philadelphia. The first meeting is next week.
