DA Says Both Men Fired Lethal Shots at Wilson; Amtrak Engineer Had Short Break, Used Cell Phone

Two brothers charged with killing Philadelphia police officer Robert Wilson during a shootout inside a video game store each struck the officer with a potentially lethal shot, according to the DA at the suspects preliminary hearing yesterday. Ex-convict Carlton Hipps, and half brother Ramone Williams, together fired six bullets that struck Officer Wilson moments after announcing a robbery. Wilson, a 30-year-old father of two, had stopped in the Game Stop on March 5 to buy a gift for his son's 10th birthday.

Union officials are offering new details on how an Amtrak engineer spent the hours before last week's deadly derailment in Philadelphia. Railroad Workers United says that Brandon Bostian's shift on May 12 had been grueling and his rest break was shortened by equipment-related delays on his earlier train to Washington. The train arrived 26 minutes late, leaving Bostian about an hour to rest and eat before his trip back to New York on the train that eventually derailed.

The cellphone of the engineer on Amtrak 188 was used the day of last week's deadly derailment according to the National Transportation Safety Board, but investigators are still trying to determine whether any of the activity took place during the doomed ride. The NTSB has engineer, Brandon Bostian’s phone and says "calls were made, text messages sent, and data used" on May 12. Investigators have not determined exactly when the phone was used. Engineers are forbidden by federal regulation and Amtrak rules from using a cellphone during train operations.
