Lyrid Meteor Showers in Philadelphia Skies Tonight 4/22-23/15 #LyridMeteorShower Video

The annual Lyrid meteor shower is expected to peak overnight tonight with the best viewing just before dawn on Thursday. The skies should be clearing as the night goes on and the moon should have set by midnight, though it will be getting chilly overnight with temperatures dipping into the 40's.

The Lyrid meteor occurs every mid-April as Earth passes through a stream of dust left over from the comet Thatcher. Normally you can see 10-20 meteors/hour, but sometimes burst up to 100. The radiant point is near the constellation Lyra, or harp, which will be in the northeastern sky around midnight. You can find the constellation by searching for one of its stars, Vega, which is one of the brightest in the sky. Meteors can be see in all areas of the sky, though.

The best place to view the meteor shower around Philadelphia would be any place away from the Center City lights and out in an open field to see the entire sky, but especially towards the northeast.
